A Moment To Look Back

Image
WOW! 4 weeks down 2 to go, one mountain conquered but another one still to climb and conquer too. So many reality checks, so many lessons learned, so much still to learn. It has been a lot, to say the least. A block that goes by so fast that it feels like a race, but in fact, it is a marathon that requires you to keep a steady pace, that is not too slow, as you will fall behind, but also not too fast, as you will tire quickly.   (Velleman, 1985) says “ time spent in self-analysis might detract from your self-understanding-except, of course, on those rare occasions when your conduct has perplexed you. Then, as we have seen, it makes sense for you to drop everything and reflect. Otherwise, however, dedicating yourself to reflection is not a particularly understandable thing to do; and effort devoted to making sense of your conduct will be wasted if such effort itself makes no sense.” So now is a time to reflect look back and learn from what I have done so I can improve. I do have ...

Let us sustain this community – A Step Toward getting My Sustainable Developmental Goals Out.

Image
In OT, whenever we are forming ideas, concepts, or projects, we tend to get asked a question, a very important question at that which is:” Will it be Sustainable?” and that usually makes us dig a little deeper in terms of thinking how the idea we have come up with will be sustainable. Sustainability ensures that whatever concept is formed and implemented can be carried over even when you are no longer there as the person who formed that concept. Needless to say, there are usually bumps in the road in ensuring that everything we implement is sustainable due to the type of world we live in and the circumstances that occur, it is always worth a try, it was not called “trial and error” for nothing. “They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests. ” ("THE 17 GOALS | Sustaina...

Breaking It Down: Positionality

Image
The word positionality is a big word itself that needs to be broken down to be understood in its true essence and to be used in its correct sense. So that is what I intend to do, break it down for the average Joe to be able to understand what positionality is and what it saturates. But why is it that positionality is not understood holistically as its definition found in the above image? This is because we tend to break this word down to “Position” and place it in terms of pedestals and rank. I may think that people above me in position hold power, which may be true in some but not all aspects. I also hold a position, in ways that may be different from someone who is sitting next to me, as they also hold a position over me, in other aspects. My positionality is, that I am a young black female student occupational therapist who is healthy in mind and body and has no physical disabilities.  I am currently receiving an education at a university that would not have accepte...

Utilize readings to discuss why maternal and child health is important to society. Then analyze how this has implications for Occupational Therapy practice, particularly at a community level, and life within the context you are working in.

When I initially saw the topic based on maternal and child health, I initially thought that a healthy mom equals a happy child, that a healthy child results from a healthy mother, and that whatever the mother’s health status is, that will be of major influence on the child’s health status as well. They say that children, especially babies easily notice a person’s energy, so how much more on their mother’s health, be it physical or mental?   According to WHO, maternal health refers to the health of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period ("Health topics," 2022) . The health of women during pregnancy would be going to the clinic, going to ultrasounds, drinking prenatal vitamins, ensuring that the mother is eating healthy and preventing gestational diabetes, and many more things. Childbirth is where maternal and child health is grouped, not forgetting the mental maternal health of the mother, as this also transitions into the postnatal period. Ma...
